The glorious song of skylarks rising high above the Malvern Hills was familiar until three years ago.......
......but the last skylark anywhere on the high hills was in 2015.
The grass has been grazed too short for them. They need 20-40cms to shelter their nests and the food for their young. The last high skylarks were here on the North Hills.
The high Malverns are looking more and more like a farm nowadays
From 54 pairs in 1988 there are now just 9 pairs left, all on the commons surrounding the hills but only where the grass is long enough like here on Castlemorton Common.
But it doesn't have to be like this. Here on Bredon Hill just a few miles away lighter grazing for longer grass has tripled skylark numbers since 2005. While ours have disappeared Bredon's have thrived.
It used to be good for larks and without scrub invasion. This is 2005. We could get Malvern's skylarks back! Support skylarks by adding your voice.
